Heel
Besides the fact that it is a beautiful photograph by Helmut Newton; besides the fact that this image, sexual and tense, is pretty unto itself without the added wonder of being shot by Newton; besides the fact that a heel is a generally regarded with the cool indifference reserved for such body parts as the elbow or the knee cap or any other such rounded joint; besides the fact that when seen from a squint this picture turns fabulously abstract; despite the fact that this heel in particular might hold some aloof memory for a boy who happens to catch the image from the corner of his eye whilst walking and wonders in the dark exactly what it is about this that is so acutely sensual; or even a girl who finds it wedged between advertisements on the glossed pages of a fashion magazine and thinks to herself that a slim ankle and a well formed heel might just be more important than eye shadow or lip gloss; beside that and everything else and despite the paper-thin metaphor and in spite of the overbearing underabundance of actual fact: a heel is a heel.
It is the one of the lowliest pivot points on the humdrum human body and thus takes the weight and force of an entire being and softens it just before impacting with the ground. A rigorous worker on a thankless job. Sometimes they even bump into one another if a person is close-footed and clumsy enough, and it seems that at the most very inopportune times they have a particular penchant for getting knocked into the side of a bookcase, file cabinet, or any of the countless other harbingers of frustrated injury. This poor heel, simultaneously bearing the physical burden of a person while also carrying the airy weight of sex.
